Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Advertising & Sponsorship Sales Manager who will be responsible for advertising and sponsorship revenue streams across our large portfolio of journals and products. You must be a self-motivated individual whose strength is to establish, develop and maintain long-term relationships with existing and potential customers. This is a hands-on role with the potential to build up a new team and also develop sales for an exciting range of products primarily via the phone but also in person.
Job Role/Responsibilities
- Identify new services and products targeted at key clients
- Ensure that the Advertising & Sponsorship Sales team members hit monthly, quarterly and annual sales targets
- Keep up-to-date with industry standards, trends and develop market-knowledge
- Represent BioMed Central and develop key accounts on a global level
- Sell online advertising, sponsored supplements and reprints to commercial companies in the Life Sciences and Pharmaceutical sector
- Contact prospects by telephone and email to present BioMed Central's suite of products and services
- Build long-term relationships with key buyers and decision makers
- After-sales support and account management provided to existing and new customers
- Work with the Advertising Account Manager to ensure the smooth running of all ongoing campaigns and high quality of service to clients
- Work with the Advertising Account Manager to maximize revenue from advertising partner networks (e.g. Google AdSense)
- Report on sales activities and sales to Senior management and the Director of Sales and Marketing
- Attend international conferences and networking events to develop BioMed Central’s Advertising and Sponsorship Sales customer base

Genome Medicine, a new online journal being developed by the open access publisher BioMed Central, is seeking an enthusiastic, well-organised, literate PhD or MD (or equivalent post-graduate) to join its expanding editorial team as an Assistant Editor.
Genome Medicine, the premier medical journal of BioMed Central and the sister journal to Genome Biology, will publish reviews, commentaries and original research articles of outstanding quality aimed at keeping physicians, clinical researchers and basic scientists informed of advances in medicine, as influenced by genomics and other large-scale or high-throughput approaches.
The successful candidate will, together with other members of the editorial team, identify research articles suitable for Genome Medicine’s scope and interest level and make decisions on publication on the basis of referees' advice. Additional responsibilities of the team include the commissioning of reviews, meeting reports and comments, advocacy to authors, scientific conference attendance, as well as liaising with the editorial team that is responsible for peer-review of manuscripts for a wide range of biological and clinical research journals, including BMC Medical Genomics and BMC Cancer. Computer literacy and a keen eye for detail are essential; editorial experience would be an advantage but is not essential for candidates who have editorial aptitude and a relevant science or medical background.

Job description
Assistant Editors are responsible for the peer review process on the journals they work on, assessing the manuscript upon submission, selecting and inviting peer reviewers, corresponding with the authors and reviewers, and making decisions on manuscripts on the basis of the peer reviewers' reports. Assistant Editors also suggest manuscripts to be highlighted as Research Highlights and to be press released.
Manuscripts
- Process approximately as many manuscripts as you receive over each two-week period.
- Assess each manuscript on receipt, and chose and invite experts to peer review.
- Answer author queries in a timely fashion, using standard letters where possible.
- Make decisions on manuscripts, seeking further advice when required.
- Fast track manuscripts as required.
- Suggest articles for press release based on reviewers' reports and co-ordinate timely press releases as required.
- Suggest and write blurbs as required.
- Suggest improvements to systems, websites, and to the manuscript process.
